Calera may be the geographic center of Alabama, but for a few weeks each winter, the city transforms into the North Pole.
The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum is once again sponsoring its popular Polar Express rides.
The annual seasonal tradition focuses heavily around Chris Van Allsburgls&8217; classic Christmas tale, which is read while passengers are transported to Santa&8217;s North Pole Workshop.
From there, Santa and Mrs. Claus, along with a couple of elves, board the train and pass out cookies and presents to each child.
&8220;I think people love the Polar Express because it&8217;s an activity the whole family can participate in,&8221; said Phil Burmeister, conductor.
Dozens of volunteers work around the year to ensure each year will be a success.
&8220;I wish I had known about this when my children were little,&8221; said Carol Dollar, who volunteers along with her teenage son and daughter.
The last Polar Express trips of the season ride out this weekend, Dec. 15-17. Tickets sell out quickly and are $24 per person. Trains depart at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. each night.

The Polar Express, along with Thomas the Tank Engine&8217;s visit in spring provides the majority of the museum&8217;s operating budget
