SPECIAL TO THE REPORTER

Holiday Happenings came to Oak Mountain Intermediate School Saturday, Dec. 2 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m.

There were several holiday musical performances, from the Oak Mountain Elementary &8220;Bluebird Choir,&8221; to the Inverness Elementary third grade choir and the Oak Mountain Intermediate fifth grade show choir, who performed seasonal selections.

The Oak Mountain Intermediate fourth grade choir and the Intermediate Players combined talents to perform &8220;All American Holidays,&8221; a musical production.

OMIS had its fabulous silent auction, which featured donated items or themed baskets submitted by each classroom. The basket themes included home d/cor, spa packages, sports merchandise, kid&8217;s fun stuff, artwork, &8220;A Taste of Birmingham&8221; dinners and many more.

This year, each class also submitted a decorated Christmas wreath for the auction, which resulted in over 40 beautiful and unique decorations.

OMIS PTO Board, Student Council and fifth grade Show Choir combined efforts to host the first annual OMIS Poinsettia Sale and Community Service Event.

Poinsettias ordered during the fundraiser in October were distributed and those purchased for donation were personally delivered to a senior at a local nursing home by the OMIS Student Council and show choir members. The show choir performed their Christmas program for the seniors during the &8220;special delivery&8221; on Dec. 14.

OMIS also opened their Holiday Shop, a mini store set up at the school with inexpensive gifts for the students to purchase for friends and family.

Coach Mike Goodwin, P.E. teacher at OMIS, agreed to be the &8220;Grinch&8221; and posed for photos throughout the morning.

Angela Durr, OMIS PTO president, explained, &8220;Holiday Happenings is an OMIS tradition. The families, students and faculty all come together to kick off the holiday season in grand style. OMIS is able to host its two feeder schools Oak Mountain Elementary School and Inverness Elementary School at a fun-filled event designed to bring the community together.

A&8221;lso, the addition of the poinsettia sale this year allowed the spirit of Holiday Happenings to continue as the Student Council delivered the donated poinsettias to a local nursing home.&8221;

She added, &8220;OMIS truly strives to reach out to the community by inviting them into our school and by taking Holiday Happenings out of the school doors to those who need some holiday cheer.

The faculty, parents, students and families are proud to be involved in such a splendid and successful holiday tradition.&8221;
