If you are in need of a smoke detector in the Chelsea area, then now is the best time to receive one. The Chelsea Fire Department is providing free smoke detectors to residents who live within city limits.
The detectors were bought with a grant the department received from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Fire Chief Wayne Shirley said the department has provided this service in the past, and hopes to continue to do so, when funds are available. &8220;We will continue to apply for grants to replenish the supply,&8221; said Shirley.
&8220;We want to express the need for early warning and for residents to be able to get out of their homes safely.&8221;
Shirley added that during the winter months, fires seem to double and even though they are providing this service now, it is a need all year long. &8220;Our department looks for any reason we can to prevent a fire, than having to go out and help someone in trouble. It would be ideal if everyone would be able to get out safely due to a smoke detector. It is definitely a need in every home,&8221; said Shirley.
The department received 300 smoke detectors, which can be picked up while they are still in supply at the Chelsea Fire Station on Chesser Drive, off of U.S. 280
