A news baseball training facility has opened in Shelby County.

Bases Loaded, a training center continues to grow in Alabaster. From six lessons per day in 2003, Jeff Segar&8217;s business has grown to over 390 lessons.

The increase has caused Segar and his trainers to move south on Alabama 119 to a new facility with eight batting cages and a baseball field that is 300 feet deep to center field.

&8220;It&8217;s a field of dreams. When we started there was nothing here. There were a few houses but nothing else. You just drive kind of in the middle of no where and you&8217;ve got this, it&8217;s pretty cool,&8221; said Segar of the field that is lined with palm trees along the outfield fence.

&8220;It gives a nice spring training feel to it,&8221; Segar said.

Segar, a former All-American short stop for the University of Montevallo, started the training business after hanging up his glove in 2004 upon being released by the Tampa Yankees.

&8220;This is what I&8217;ve always wanted to do, and we have some great trainers working with us,&8221; Segar said.

Those trainers include former professional baseball players Mick Fieldbinder and Norm Martell, who is a part-owner.

New York Yankees pitching prospect Coulter Bean and Seattle Mariners minor league pitcher Nick Allen also help out in the off season.

Last week, Bases Loaded opened their doors to the Alabaster Park and Recreation league for their spring and summer baseball evaluations.

&8220;They had a portion of the evaluations last year and had about 150 come through this year,&8221; Segar said.

The evaluations and new location have helped Bases Loaded gain more community exposure.

&8220;A lot of people thought we were just a training facility for our travel teams, but we offer everything to the general public,&8221; Segar said. &8220;Yes, we offer training to our travel teams, but that&8217;s because some take it more serious than others, but if you just want to come in and hit in the coin operated cages or come in and buy batting gloves or a bat, that&8217;s what we&8217;re here for.&8221;

Partnering with Bases Loaded are two other businesses in the building.

Jorge Bonnett, a five time Olympian, brings his Zona Fit fitness program to Alabaster.

Bonnett, who has already partnered with Pelham High School&8217;s wrestling team to begin a 50-week training program in March, uses his experiences in Judo to train athletes of all sports.

Also housed in the new facility is J. Anthony Productions, a production company with small documentary and promotional video experience.

Segar hopes that partnering with the two businesses will help offer a complete package to his patrons.

&8220;Both of these companies are ahead of their time. Zona Fit will be a great addition to the betterment of the athletes, and J. Anthony will help us with personalized training videos,&8221; Segar said
