A second man pled guilty last week to a series of July carjackings, including one in which a University of Montevallo student was shot.

Mackese Walker Speight, 28, of Dolomite, admitted Friday to carjacking and firearm violations. He will be sentenced in April and faces a minimum of 57 years in prison.

With the plea, Speight avoided a trial, which was set to begin Monday.

Another man, Keundre Lerico Johnson, 19, of Birmingham, pled guilty back in January.

The two men carried out a crime spree that started on July 26 when a Birmingham pizza delivery driver&8217;s car was stolen, and he was robbed at gunpoint of $25.

Five days later, UM graduate student Amy Holaway Rogers was abducted and car-jacked outside her Homewood apartment. She was later shot in Hoover as she tried to escape. Rogers survived her injuries, but surgeons removed her spleen and left kidney.

Speight said later the same day he abducted a woman outside a Leeds car wash and forced her to withdraw money from a bank ATM machine. She escaped without injury.
