FROM STAFF REPORTS

A convicted sex offender, who had been running from Shelby County authorities since January, has been arrested in Birmingham.

U.S. Marshals arrested Stephen Hornfeck around 4 a.m. Friday morning, after receiving a tip on where he was living.

Hornfeck, 47, was convicted in October of second-degree burglary and first-degree sexual abuse in Shelby County Circuit Court. A warrant was issued after he failed to appear for sentencing on Jan. 8.

Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry attributed the arrest to law enforcement, the media and public working well together.

&8220;I would like to thank the local media for putting this story in front of the public and the concerned citizen who contacted the Sheriff&8217;s Office with information,&8221; said Curry. &8220;This is an excellent example of working together to take a wanted individual off the streets.&8221;
