Of the four Shelby County athletes putting on an Auburn University jersey this spring, Neil Caudle of Spain Park and Ryan Shoemaker of Oak Mountain have been producing the most talk among the camp. However, it was two other local stand-outs who shined in Saturday&8217;s A-Day game on the Plains.

Former Pelham Panther Montez Billings led all receivers with four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown, while Briarwood Christian alum Andrew McCain is positioning himself for a starting role at right tackle, after earning the Most Improved Offensive Lineman award before the start of Saturday&8217;s scrimmage.

&8220;Montez had his best day in his two years here. He is a big receiver that can get open in the middle of the field,&8221; head coach Tommy Tuberville said.

Quarterback Brandon Cox was pleased with Billings&8217; performance.

&8220;He&8217;s had a great spring and is obviously going to be a go-to guy this year,&8221; Cox said.

Cox, who threw for 246 yards passing and three touchdowns in the game, was pleased with his offensive line, and also with McCain&8217;s

improvement.

&8220;He&8217;s come in and done a great job, coming in at second string and working his way up. He&8217;s really improved,&8221; Cox said.

Caudle was 2-for-8 passing on Saturday, but looks to challenge Blake Field for the number two quarterback role in the final spring scrimmage today. &8220;Hopefully one of the guys will pull ahead. We&8217;re going to make that a report card and final grade for our back-up,&8221; Tubberville said. He says a back-up could be named by the end of the off-season but he would like to have it toda
