Despite dropping a pair of games to Lakeside Academy Friday, the Kingwood Christian Lions are hoping to still reach the playoffs for the first time since their state championship run in 2001.

&8220;We&8217;re still in it,&8221; coach Jeremy Sims said.

In order to advance, the Lions need either Lakeside or Springwood to sweep the week&8217;s series, followed by a Kingwood victory over Springwood after they return from spring break next week.

&8220;I feel good about it. We have at least a 60-70 percent chance, and the only way I&8217;m a little nervous is that we&8217;re coming off spring break. That&8217;s just a lot of time off,&8221; Sims said.

Winning just one of the doubleheader games on Friday would have helped the Lions&8217; chances, but the Chiefs collected 20 hits on their way to a 6-3 win in game one and a

6-5 loss in game two.

&8220;Andrew (Pearce) and I haven&8217;t been hit like that all season long,&8221; said Brooks Webb, who pitched game one for the Lions.

Webb allowed one earned run through five innings of work as the Chiefs rallied back to break a 3-3 tie with an RBI single by Blayne Green. Lakeside added a run in the sixth and seventh to round out the scoring.

In game two, the Lions struck first with an RBI double from Drew Davis, but were held scoreless over the next four innings. Lakeside took the lead with a four-run third inning, but Webb and Andrew Wood both collected RBIs in the sixth inning, then the Chiefs added two more in the seventh. A rally by Kingwood fell a run short in the bottom of the seventh, as Matt Owens and Webb drove in a pair of runs.

Owens led the Lions on the day with three hits and four RBIs, while Webb had three RBIs total. Wood also had three hits, including a home run in game one.

In other AISA games:

-Shelby wins pair at home: Shelby Academy picked up a pair of wins last week, defeating Warrior Academy 13-2 last Tuesday and Cornerstone Christian 11-4 on Friday.

Kevin Lackey led the team with five RBIs on the week, while Cody Jones and Jeremy Ogles each had three RBIs. Ethan Harris and Josh Sharp picked up the wins on the mound.

-Coosa Valley&8217;s flooding with runs: The Coosa Valley Academy Rebels have been over flowing with runs in their past three games, defeating Warrior Academy 13-3 and 23-3 on Friday and scoring 20 unanswered runs through three innings against Central Christian on Monday.

Zac Taylor was a perfect 9-for-9 through three games with seven doubles and 10 RBIs, while Steven Clinkscales added eight RBIs. Michael Klinner added five RBIs against Warrior.

Taylor carried a no-hitter with nine strikeouts through three innings Monday before Central Christian walked off the field forcing an end to the game.

CVA hosts Shelby Academy Friday at 5 p.m. to decide the area championship
