In a career of milestones as head coach of the University of Montevallo&8217;s baseball team, Greg Goff is looking for at least one more this week. After defeating Valdosta State 8-2 on senior day Sunday, Goff sits on the verge of his first 40-win regular season.

&8220;It will be a huge milestone. It truly sets this program apart from those with average seasons,&8221; said Goff, who has 39 wins with four regular season games to play.

UM started the weekend with a doubleheader sweep over Valdosta State, 4-2 and 10-9, on Saturday to clinch a spot in their third consecutive Gulf South Conference Tournament and remain in the hunt for the GSC East Championship. After concluding conference play with three straight GSC East series sweeps, UM secured at least a second-place finish with a 13-5 record, while the University of West Alabama, 11-4 in the GSC, has a series with West Georgia remaining this weekend.

&8220;My hat&8217;s off to those guys if they finish in first. They&8217;ve had a good season,&8221; Goff said.

UM, picked first in the GSC pre-season poll, lost their GSC series to West Alabama and the University of North Alabama in March, but has since won 11 of their last 12 games.

&8220;Our backs were up against the wall a little bit, and our guys never gave up. They didn&8217;t play the scoreboard, they played to win, and we got nine straight,&8221; Goff said, referring to his conference schedule.

UM currently sits in third place in the NCAA Division II South Central Region and could return as one of six teams in the regional.

&8220;If we can win 3-of-4 or 4-of-4 this week it will put us in good shape entering the (GSC) Tournament,&8221; Goff said.

UM (39-13) traveled to No. 6 Columbia State yesterday, however results were not available at press time. They close the regular season this weekend with a three-game series at Oakland City University in Indiana.

The GSC tournament is May 5-10
