Laura L. Horn

Laura L. Horn, 68, of Columbiana passed away Monday, April 23, 2007 at her home.

The funeral service was held Wednesday, April 25 at 11 a.m. at Bolton-Letlow Chapel. The Rev. Mike Miller and Dr. Conrad Sharps presided. She was buried at Pinelawn Gardens.

Visitation was held April 24 from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to the funeral service.

A graduate of Minor High School of Birmingham and the 1960 class of the University of Montevallo prepared her for a lifelong career in education, teaching English for 37 years.

She met her future husband, Howell Yeager Horn, while a student at Montevallo.

They were married on Nov. 18, 1961.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Etha LaBorde of Forestdale, formerly of Minor.

She is survived by her husband, Howell Y. Horn, of Columbiana; daughter, Marsha H. Harbin of Hoover; sister, Madilyn L. (Don) Comer of Forestdale; mother-in-law, Mayme M. Horn of Columbiana; sister-in-law, Carol H. Shurbet of Columbiana; several nieces and nephews; a host of former students and an abundance of friends.

She shared with her students the love of literature. Most of her students to this day can repeat at least part of Chaucer&8217;s &8220;the Prologue of the Canterbury Tales.&8221;

Laura had a passion for needlework.

One of her projects, &8220;The Fireman&8217;s Prayer&8221; is displayed at the Columbiana Fire Department.

She was a member of the Embroidery&8217;s Guild of America, Birmingham Chapter.

She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to the existing Laura Horn Educational Fund of Shelby County High School, 101 Washington St., Columbiana, Ala.

The scholarship was established in Laura&8217;s honor when she retired from 37 years of teaching.
