The item topping Lora Kral&8217;s birthday list this year was treats. Not just any treats but the kind that look like bones and smell like bacon.

Instead of asking for presents for herself, 11-year-old Lora wanted a party for her and her dog Harley. All the gifts were donations to the Shelby County Humane Society.

&8220;Because I like dogs and so maybe they can have a better time here (humane society),&8221; Lora said. &8220;There were dog bones and leashes and cat toys and liter and stuff.&8221;

Jan Kral, Lora&8217;s mother, was thrilled her daughter came up with a unique way to give to a good cause.

&8220;It was really her idea,&8221; Kral said. &8220;If you can donate $50 to spay a dog, you save an animal&8217;s life.&8221;

Lora&8217;s party brought in more than $300 in cash, as

well as toys and treats. This is not the first time Lora has given up birthday presents to help animals. She began by having a birthday party for the wildlife center when she was 9.

Last year, she requested her family be foster parents to a dog and its puppies. That&8217;s how Harley, whose birthday was also in April, came

into the family.

Lora and her mother hope more people will donate. One way people can contribute is by participating in a Collared Shirt Day on May 11, in celebration of Be Kind to Animals week.

The fundraiser will allow

a casual day for employees who purchase and wear a T-shirt from the humane society. Shirts cost $15; the amount needed to vaccinate shelter animals. For information, call 669-3916 or visit www.shelbyhumane.or
