Hoover city officials hope to finish construction on one of Shelby County&8217;s newest parks next month.

Veteran&8217;s Park, adjacent to Spain Park High School on Valleydale Road, is little more than a main pavilion, playground and restroom facility away from being ready.

&8220;All that work is scheduled to be completed by June 4,&8221; said Erin Colbaugh, events coordinator for the City of Hoover. When the 82-acre park is complete, it will feature three beach volleyball courts, a professionally developed 5-K cross-country course, open-air pavilions, two playgrounds, one of which is handicap accessible, restrooms and concessions. It also has large, open grassy areas for large crowds.

Already, residents are taking advantage of the park&8217;s offerings.

&8220;It&8217;s not closed, so lots of people that are aware that it&8217;s there go and run and walk their dogs and take their kids out to the playground,&8221; Colbaugh said, adding there&8217;s a group playing beach volleyball on a regular basis.

The park officially opens with a dedication on June 16 as part of the City of Hoover&8217;s 40th birthday celebration. To date, it is the city&8217;s largest park.

Throughout the summer, Veteran&8217;s Park will host events such as Hoover&8217;s Friday night movie series in June and Jog in July.

The park will host a variety of cross-country events in the fall, including the Great American Cross Country Festival, and the city&8217;s annual Pet-A-Palooza in November
