Thursday night, Calera Eagle fans received a taste of what&8217;s to come this fall &045; a little dish called Winterbottom-to-Lacey with an appetizer of Winterbottom-to-Haynes.

Upcoming senior quarterback Paul Winterbottom picked up where he left off in November, racking up 126 yards on the ground and 130 through the air to lead Calera to a 27-0 victory in two quarters of varsity play in Thursday&8217;s spring game against Bibb County at Cairns Stadium.

&8220;He’s worked his tail off in the offseason to get stronger and faster, and it really showed tonight,&8221; Eagles&8217; head coach Mac Thompson said. &8220;There&8217;s no doubt he was on fire there in the first half.&8221;

After the Eagles&8217; defense held Bibb County to four-and-out on the opening possession, Winterbottom moved under center to complete a second-down pass to Dominic Wilson, followed by a fake handoff as he rolled out for a 45-yard dash down the field on third-and-10. The run set up a first-down, 10-yard touchdown run by Kaderius Lacey, who broke a tackle at the four and dragged the Bibb Choctaw linebacker to the goal line with him.

Two possessions later Matt Tracy picked off Bibb&8217;s quarterback and returned the ball to the Choctaws&8217; 19 to set up a 20-yard pass from Winterbottom to Earl Haynes two plays later.

Bibb County was four-and-out again before Winterbottom found Haynes again at the goal line on a 31-yard pass, however the ball was bobbled and dropped. The Choctaws&8217; picked off Winterbottom on the following play for his second and third incomplete passes of the night. He was 6-for-9 in the game.

Bibb was picked again on the first play of the second half, this time by Ricco Jones, who returned the ball 38 yards for a touchdown to put the Eagles up 20-0.

Winterbottom connected with Lacey twice on the next possession, first on a 3-yard, second-down pass, followed by a 77-yard touchdown.

&8220;We’re planing on him being our go-to guy. He and Earl are two we can’t do without,&8221; Thompson said. &8220;There’s not a kid in Alabama that can cover Kaderius one-on-one.&8221;

Brandon Wells and J.R. Posey each played a quarter at quarterback with the junior varsity in the second half.

Calera also has two new kickers for 2007. Nathan Langer was 1-for-2 in extra point attempts, while Hector Marrano was 2-for-2.

With four starters playing in the baseball state finals in Montgomery, Bibb County suffered offensively with 22 yards passing and 30 yards on the ground in varsity play.

Eagles&8217; coach Thompson hopes to continue to move forward from last year&8217;s 9-2 record and first-round playoff loss.

&8220;As soon as we lost last year, we made up our mind that we were never going to get beat in the first round again. We hit the weight room that Monday morning and didn&8217;t let up,&8221; Thompson said.

-Montevallo 7, Verbena 6: Montevallo struck first Thursday night against the Verbena Red Devils on a scripted pass-run option play that took Kevin Callender seven yards for a touchdown. Marcus Hood tacked on the extra point to make it 7-0. Tyler Kelley later broke a 60-yard touchdown run for Verbena. The Red Devils drove into the Bulldogs&8217; red zone earlier in the game, but the &8217;Dawgs forced a fumble on the 7-yard line to end the drive.

-Oak Mountain 13, Gadsden 10: Drew McKnight led the Oak Mountain Eagles past Gadsden Thursday night with a pair of touchdown passes. His 14-yard connection with Michael Kinnel helped put the Eagles up 7-0. Gadsden responded with a field goal. Two possessions later, Zac May picked off a pass for Oak Mountain and returned the interception 20 yards to help set up a screen pass to Eric McKelvey for the Eagles&8217; final score. The spring game began with the junior varsity teams facing off for a quarter before two quarters of varsity action. Alex Corley&8217;s 60-yard pass to Josh Thomas in the fourth quarter highlighted the freshman playing time.

-Briarwood 13, Hueytown 13: Barrett Trotter helped lead the Briarwood Lions to a 13-0 lead in the first quarter of a three quarter varsity scrimmage Friday night at Hueytown. Early in the game, Trotter found Race Harrison on a 25-yard screen pass for a touchdown, followed by an extra point by Matthew Gordon to take a 7-0 lead. Trotter followed with a 35-yard pitch-and-catch to Caleb Castille, however the point after touchdown try failed. Hueytown added points in the second and third quarter before the junior varsity took the field. Briarwood&8217;s training resumes with workouts on June 4.

Pelham 14, Mountain Brook 7: Ryan Williams and Drew Ray each scored touchdowns to give Pelham an early 14-0 lead Friday. Williams&8217; score came on a 1-yard run, while Ray scored on a goal-line slant pass from Will Hyden. Dan Jackson had two successful extra point kicks. Mountain Brook scored its touchdown in the second quarter.
