Food for thought: Ezells opens in Pelham

Eat catfish and be somebody!

That&8217;s the slogan of a familiar restaurant for anyone who loves a good fried catfish fillet. Oh, and don&8217;t forget the hushpuppies.

Ezell&8217;s Fish Camp originated out of a two-room dogtrot cabin in Choctaw County. Now the experience has been brought to Pelham.

ATMOSPHERE

&8220;Where else can you sit by a creek, have some good catfish and drink a cold beer?&8221; asked owner Agnew Hall. Hall said he felt like the restaurant&8217;s spot off of Interstate 65 was perfect for a laid-back getaway.

With a rustic feel inside and out, families can come together and imagine they were tucked far away in the woods.

When lines are long, families can sit outside on wooden chairs or, if they are lucky, grab the swing that sits along the creek.

Inside, you immediately have an idea of what you are getting. Fishing gear and decorations cover the wooden interior along with an antler chandelier and a bear greeting you as you are seated.

MENU

Ezell&8217;s Fish Camp is known for its catfish filets fried up in homemade batter.

A man cannot live on catfish alone, so, the Ezell family created its own coleslaw and hushpuppies recipes from scratch.

Originally, Pauline Ezell set up a huge pot in the yard of the Choctaw County home and held fish fries in the 1930s. Catfish was only $.50 per meal back then. Fish is a little more expensive than half a dollar now but well worth it.

SERVICE

Waiters and waitresses are friendly and you can expect Hall himself to be in the kitchen frying up food or out mingling with customers.
