Locals compete in track events

Seven athletes from Oak Mountain, Briarwood Christian and Pelham competed in the Alabama High School Athletic Association Decathlon and Heptathalon Championships at Mountain Brook High School last week.

Oak Mountain&8217;s Sarah Bond and Mary Grace DeCastra represented Shelby County in the Heptathalon. Bond, who has committed to run for Birmingham-Southern College, finished seventh in the meet despite a fifth place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. DeCastra finished seventh in the javelin toss with a distance of 83-07 but did not finish the heptathalon.

Derek Luquire and Zac Epperson both represented Oak Mountain in the Decathlon and were joined by Briarwood Christian&8217;s Riley White and Pelham&8217;s Eric Bowen and Logan Tuck.

Luquire placed 15th overall, while posting the 12th best time in the 1500-meter run, 4:52.58. Epperson, who has signed with Samford University, followed in 17th place overall and sixth in pole vault with a height of 12-09.5.

White was 49th overall, followed by Brown at 51. Tuck did not finish.

Dakota Matthews of East Lawrence High won the Decathlon with 5,648 points, while Hoover&8217;s Grant Bullington set a pole vault record at 14-05.25.

Johnnie Borries of St. Paul&8217;s Episcopal School won the Heptathalon with 4, 511 points.
