As of this week, a draft of the city of Pelham&8217;s new zoning codes are available for viewing. A public hearing on the new plans will be held June 14.

Mike Morgan, Pelham revenue director, said existing zoning restrictions do not protect the city in the long run.

&8220;(We are) trying to get this thing back to today&8217;s standards, today&8217;s regulations across the board, as opposed to what worked 30 years ago,&8221; Morgan said.

The city completed a comprehensive plan in 2003 aimed at continuing progress in Pelham.

&8220;First impressions are lasting impressions,&8221; Morgan said. &8220;This new zoning ordinance will improve the esthetic value of our city.&8221;

Zoning changes in the proposal include new districts for garden homes, townhouses and apartments as well as codes for mixed-use areas, allowing people to live and work in the same area.

Other provisions focus on curb appeal, calling for sidewalks, screening for outside storage and signage and parking restrictions.

After hearing public comments, the planning commission will vote on the ordinance and revised zoning map.
