Food for thought: Come aboard Montevallo Coach

Published 12:00 am Wednesday, May 30, 2007

Montevallo&8217;s old Alabama Coach Company bus terminal has been transformed into the city&8217;s newest restaurant. Bryant Turner, a former University of Montevallo student, wanted to add to local options.

&8220;They (Bryant and friends) used to look in the windows as kids and would say wouldn&8217;t this make a great restaurant,&8221; said Ian Stuart, operations manager.

The menu will be limited while the restaurant holds its

&8216;soft-opening&8217; over the next few weeks.

&8220;The menu is very organic in that I need to see the way that people in town want to eat,&8221; Stuart said. &8220;I want to give them what they want

but at the same time bring up their palate.&8221;

ATMOSPHERE

The Alabama Coach Company, in a way, provides two restaurants in one. For lunch, it is a relaxed place to grab some veggies or a burger. At night, the white linens and candles come out to provide extra evening ambiance. There is also a stage set up for future musical acts to perform during dinner and for the late-night crowd.

MENU

During the day, patrons can come by and enjoy the meat and three plate. Fans of traditional southern food can also appease their appetite with the hand-battered fried green tomatoes. There are salads, sandwiches, steaks and salmon. Stuart said there are a lot of exciting new options coming in the future as well.

&8220;We&8217;re going to start carrying mahi tuna encrusted in sesame seeds with an apple fennel slaw,&8221; Stuart explained. &8220;We are going to start bringing in a little more gourmet things. It&8217;s (the menu) going to be always evolving.&8221;

SERVICE

Servers are local college students, and they have been studying up. Many are able to suggest drinks to best fit dishes and have the menu down pat. Stuart said there are still some changes to be made and upgrades to the menu coming but he wants patrons to drive those improvements with their suggestions.
