The Calera City Council agreed May 29 to rezone Chemical Lime Company&8217;s plant on Alabama 25.

The approval finalizes a deal that will let the company dig for limestone in exchange for a $7 million contribution towards a new sports complex.

Back in January, the company pledged to help fund the 55-acre park, but only if the city agreed to annex and zone its quarry site for industrial use.

The city kept its end of the bargain by annexing and rezoning 1,040 acres near Oliver Park for the quarry in March.

Calera Mayor George Roy said Tuesday that moving the plant property from MR to M-3 was just a formality.

&8220;This property actually operates under the zoning guidelines today,&8221; said Roy, of the property that was previously part of unincorporated Shelby County.

The Calera Sports Complex would be built adjacent to the future Calera High School and would include baseball, softball and soccer fields, as well as tennis courts and a walking path
