HOOVER &8212; The city of Hoover will celebrate its 40th birthday at Veterans Park this Saturday, complete with entertainment, activities and, of course, cake and ice cream.

&8220;The whole theme of the event is like a 60s theme since we were incorporated in 1967,&8221; said Erin Colbaugh, events coordinator. &8220;We&8217;re including interesting things for everybody.&8221;

Colbaugh said the day officially starts at 10 a.m., but kicks off with 5-K and 1-mile fun runs starting at 7:30 a.m. Registration is $5, which can be paid that morning.

The city has also been waiting to formally dedicate the new park, located behind Spain Park High School. &8220;We were waiting till we got the construction of the pavilion completed to do that, so this is the perfect time,&8221; Colbaugh said, adding veterans are encouraged to come dressed in their military attire.

Entertainment starts at 11 a.m. with Full Moon and continues through the afternoon with performances by Fred Astaire dance studios, the Spain Park Jazz Band and headling act Three on a String, who played at the city&8217;s 20th birthday.

One of the highlights of the games and activities is a dunking booth manned by the Hoover City School foundation. Colbaugh said dunkees include Hoover football coach Rush Propst, Superintendent Andy Craig, Mayor Tony Petelos and Spain Park track coach Mark Zelwack.

Other highlights include a through-the-decades fashion show by Hoover&8217;s teen board, a doggie fashion show and an antique car show. Donated cake and ice cream will be served as long as it lasts
