Four local women shine at Miss Alabama pageant

Three local women captured top spots in the Miss Alabama pageant June 9.

Elizabeth Cochran, Miss Chelsea Area, was named second runner-up. Cochran, 18, is a resident of Helena and a student at Birmingham-Southern College. Her platform was &8220;With Every Beat,&8221; focusing on the prevention of cardiovascular disease.

&8220;Liz has all of the necessary qualities to be a Miss Alabama in that she is very poised, intelligent, talented and a very fit young lady,&8221; said Rebecca Turner, coordinator of the Miss Chelsea Area pageant.

Cochran won the swimsuit competition the Friday night before the final pageant and tied with Alicia Lewis of Hoover for first place in the competition&8217;s June 7 talent portion, making her the only double-preliminary winner competing for Miss Alabama. She received a total of $10,000 in scholarships in this year&8217;s pageant.

Katie Boyd, 21, of Pelham took third runner-up after finishing as first runner-up last year. Boyd is majoring in dance and communicative disorders at the University of Alabama. She won the Friday talent competition.

Jenna Bryant, Miss Auburn University and a resident of Hoover, placed in the Top 10.

Several preliminaries are already scheduled for this year. The Miss Shelby County pageant is this Friday, June 22. The Miss Chelsea Area pageant will be held Sept. 22. Miss Hoover

will be held at Spain Park High School June 20.

Miss Painted Rock Jamie Langley of Wadley took home the crown of Miss Alabama and will go on to compete in the Miss America pageant next year.
