Seven start in all-star soccer games

Seven rising seniors from Shelby County were selected as starters for Tuesday’s All-Star Sports Week soccer games at John Hunt Park in Huntsville.

Oak Mountain’s Jeremiah Jones, who helped lead his team to a state championship at the same complex in May, assisted the North team’s fourth goal of the night in a 5-1 victory over the South. Briarwood’s Andrew Whitaker and Nathan Hains of Spain Park also saw time on the pitch.

In the North girls’ soccer game, Briarwood’s Deborah Ross allowed a goal just six minutes into the match by Lydia Townsend of Enterprise. Townsend completed her hat trick with a pair of second half goals to lead the South to a 3-0 victory. Ross collected one save in net, playing all 40 minutes of the first half.

Spain Park’s Jamie Cartledge led both teams in total shots with 11 for the North team, followed by Indian Springs’ Devon Weldon with four and two by Oak Mountain’s Lauren Skaggs. Megan Eskridge of Indian Springs also started for the North.

Briarwood’s Audra Brawley and Thompson’s Mary Morris were selected to the North team, but did not participate
