NORTH SHELBY – The long wait is over. Briarwood quarterback Barrett Trotter is going to Auburn.

Trotter told his teammates and coaches in a 2:45 p.m. team meeting Thursday.

“First of all I just want to start of by saying thanks to all of you teammates and all of you guys who came out every week to win a bunch of games,” Trotter said to his team. “I’m ready to win a state championship this year and keep on winning down at Auburn.”

Trotter, who is 66-of-96 passing for 931 yards and 12 touchdowns on the season, said that Auburn head coach Tommy Tuberville and offensive coordinator Al Borgess have compared him to the University of South Florida quarterback Matt Grothe, who led the USF Bulls to a 26-23 victory over Auburn in overtime on Sept. 9. Trotter was in attendance for the game and was told then that Auburn was interested in watching him in person against Anniston.

Tuberville watched Trotter complete 20-of-26 passes Friday night at Anniston, for 269 yards and four touchdowns.

“After the Anniston game I really felt like an offer was coming,” Trotter said.

Trotter received a call Sunday night while at church from Tuberville, who extended the offer. Borges then took the phone and immediately wanted to know when Trotter would announce his commitment.

The recruiting process began for the life-long University of Alabama fan when he was a sophomore in high school. After attending a camp at Auburn and meeting Borges, he immediately started thinking of playing in orange and blue instead of crimson and white.

“When recruiting starts you really have to put all of those previous thoughts behind you a little bit and really see which school fits you right and which place you really want to go and for me it was defiantly Auburn,” Trotter said.

Trotter will be the third Briarwood Lion to play football for Auburn, according to BCS head coach Fred Yancey.

He now looks forward to helping Auburn on the recruiting trails while helping to lead his Briarwood Lions in their quest for a Class 5A state championship
