FROM STAFF REPORTS

Special ceremonies to honor Alabama military heroes have been scheduled at three Shelby County locations for Friday, Nov. 2.

Presentations of the Liberty Bell Medal, awarded to Alabama military personnel deployed since 9/11 and family members of those presently deployed or killed in action, will be made at halftime of three high school football games.

The medal, commissioned by a joint resolution of the Alabama Senate and House of Representatives was signed by Gov. Bob Riley in March. Initial presentations were made at a June 29 ceremony in Birmingham.

Those unable to attend that ceremony will be honored at the Friday night football games: Montevallo at Vincent, Homewood at Thompson and Shelby County at Chelsea.

Each veteran registered for the Honoring Our Heroes Ceremonies will receive free admission to the football games (up to four tickets total), special parking and special seating.

The event is sponsored by the Shelby County Commission, Shelby County Board of Education, Shelby County Reporter, Alabama Legislature, Alabama Sports Festival and the Governor’s Commission on Physical Fitness.
