Three teams claim area titles off eighth-ranked Vestavia on Monday

Six teams across the county advanced to this weekend’s volleyball regional tournaments Tuesday night, as Pelham, Briarwood and Chelsea advanced as area champs and Oak Mountain, Thompson and Shelby County advance as area runner-ups.

-Pelham 3, Thompson: Whitney Billings collected 16 kills and four blocks to lead the Pelham Lady Panthers to a three game victory over Thompson (25-16, 25-22 and 25-15) to win the Class 6A, Area 10 title. Whitney Hudson added 11 kills and nine digs, while Lindsey Young had 39 assists. Lauren Sprouse’s six kills led Thompson. The Lady Warriors defeated Hueytown to advance to the area final and regional tournament. Pelham will play Minor in the first round of the region, while Thompson will face Mountain Brook.

-Briarwood 3, John Carroll 0: Leah Scroggins collected 11 kills, coupled with 10 kills by Amy Hale, to help lead third-ranked Briarwood Christian past eighth-ranked John Carroll to win the Class 5A, Area 8 title (25-15, 25-13, 28-26). Briarwood face Shelby County at the regional tournament at McAdory.

-Chelsea 3, Shelby County 2: Chelsea and Shelby County faced off for rivalry battle to win the Class 5A, Area 6 crown, as Chelsea’s Jessica Collier had 13 kills to lead her Lady Hornets (23-11) to victory. Chelsea won the first game 25-22, but fell behind 25-22 and 25-14 in the next two games. The Hornets rallied back to win game four 25-19 before needing a little extra time to edge Shelby County 16-14 in the fifth game. Braden Thacker had 34 assists for Chelsea. Shelby County’s Danitra Lee led the match with 24 kills and 12 blocks on the night through two matches. Chelsea will play eighth-ranked John Carroll in the regional tournament.

-Hoover 3, Oak Mountain 1: Oak Mountain managed to take one game off the third-ranked Hoover Bucs Tuesday, but did not have enough to pull off its second upset of the tournament, falling in four games for in the Class 6A, Area 11 championship (25-20, 24-26, 25-23, 25-21). Christen Clements led the way with 22 kills, 16 digs and four aces, while Devon Von Pingel and Sarah Morton followed with 10 kills and 15 digs respectively. Jessica Cooley had 40 assists. Oak Mountain (23-26) knocked to advance to meet Tuscaloosa County at this weekend’s regional at Hoover.
