SELMA – Coming off an impressive win against Evangel Christian last week, which wrapped up a region championship and ended a two-game losing streak, the Meadowview Trojans dominated yet a second straight opponent.

Meadowview’s running game, led by tailback Brett Collins, had to seem unstoppable to the Cornerstone defenders. The Chargers (6-2) just couldn’t contain him.

“We knew coming in here that (Collins) was special, but he’s just something else,” said Cornerstone coach Tim Smith.

It is possible October 19 could be named Brett Collins Day at Meadowview Christian. The 152-pound senior put on a stellar performance in front of a large crowd at Wasden Field to cap off homecoming week.

In the first half, he rushed for 163 yards on 10 carries with three touchdowns, including a 58-yarder on the first play from scrimmage.

He also caught a ball that went for 25 yards and threw the only touchdown pass of the game.

On defense, he recovered a Cornerstone fumble on the Trojan 10, preventing them from scoring.

The only thing he couldn’t accomplish in the first or second quarter was returning a punt for a touchdown.

That feat came with 3:40 left in the third. Catching the punt on the 50-yard line, Collins weaved his way through defenders and found the end zone again. He got pulled out fairly early in the second half and still ended up with 263 all-purpose yards with five touchdowns.

Collins, however, didn’t do it all by himself. The Trojan defense held its ground on numerous occasions. The Chargers punted once during the first half. They failed to convert on a fourth down try and turned the ball over on downs during one series.

Meadowview’s defense also forced a fumble and an interception caught J.R. Lowe. At the half the score was 29-0 in favor of the home team.

The fireworks seemed to be over until the touchdown return by Collins late in the third to make the score 35-0.

The Trojan defense tried but couldn’t quite keep the zero on the scoreboard. The Chargers marched 61 yards on their last drive, and tailback Austin Vinsant punched it in for the touchdown. A failed two point conversion made it a 35-6 game with a little more than a minute left.

After falling on the onside kick, the Trojans (7-2) ran the final seconds out.

Coach Rick Jackson was pretty happy with his players.

“Our offense came out of the gate just like you want them to, and the defense took control around the end zone,” he said. “That’s the way you want your team to play.”

Cornerstone plays host to Kingwood Friday in the final regular-season game.
