Longtime University of Montevallo head baseball coach Bob Riesener headlines a list of three UM athletic alumni listed on the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2008 ballot.

He is joined by one of his former players, Rusty Greer and former men’s basketball coach Bill Jones.

Riesener, Alabama’s all-time winningest collegiate baseball coach, led Montevallo for 30 seasons with a UM career record of 937-671 and 1,045 overall wins.

An inductee of the NAIA Hall of Fame, this is the second-straight year he has appeared on the ASHOF ballot. Prior to coaching at UM, Riesener coached at what is now the University of West Alabama and played professionally in the New York Yankees Farm League.

Greer, who was inducted into the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame this summer, played collegiately at UM for two seasons before being selected in the 10th round by Texas in the 1990 baseball draft. He spent all 15 years of his Major League Baseball career with the Texas Rangers, collecting a career batting average of .305.

Both Riesener and Greer appear on the Modern Category, Group II (basketball/baseball) section of the ballot.

Jones, an alumnus of North Alabama, helped start the Montevallo men’s basketball program, serving as its second coach from 1969-74. During his time at UM, he compiled an 85-53 record with a win percentage (.613) that is second only to current UM coach Danny Young (.791). Jones left UM in 1975 to begin a 13-year career, which included a NCAA Division II National Championship in 1979.

Jones is joined by former Gulf South Conference commissioner Hayden Riley and 17 others on the old-timers ballot.
