Carl Edward Dunnaway was born Jan. 30, 1923, a lifetime resident of North Shelby County and more than 54 years at Spain Park on Valleydale Road, went home to be with the Lord on Nov. 2, 2007. He was a member of New Hope Cumberland Presbyterian Church on Cahaba Valley Road for more than 65 years. He was loved by all who knew him, and he loved everyone!

The family will received friends Sunday, Nov. 4, 2007, from 5-8 p.m. at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham. The funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 5, 2007, at 1 p.m. in the funeral home’s chapel with the Reverend Donny Acton officiating. Burial followed in Allen Cemetery.

Mr. Dunnaway served from 1966-1987 as a laborer for the City of Birmingham Parks & Recreation Board and caretaker of the Spain Park property. Prior to that time, he worked for the late Frank E. Spain raising beef cattle on that same property from 1953-1966. Last year, he was recognized by the City of Hoover (current owner of the property) for his contributions in maintaining the park property and by proclamation the new picnic area was dedicated as the Carl Dunnaway Pavilion.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Virginia (Wooten) Dunnaway; his parents, Clem and Hattie Pearl (Bragg) Dunnaway; brothers, Arnold Dunnaway and Marvin Dunnaway; sisters, Estelle Cox, Lillian Patrick and Jessie Braswell; and great-grandson, Cale Lewis.

Papa Carl Dunnaway is survived by his wife, Barbara (Baker) Dunnaway; five sons, Dale (Jessie) Dunnaway, James (Joyce) Dunaway, Wayne (Trudy) Dunaway, Charles (Jackie) Dunnaway, and Randy (Brenae) Dunaway; step-daughters, Nancy Hurst and Kathy Chambless; his sister, Jeanette Wooten Fulmer; 10 grandsons; seven granddaughters; 12 great-grandsons; seven great-granddaughters; a host of nephews, nieces and cousins; along with a multitude of loving friends.

Mr. Dunnaway’s sons wish to express their gratitude to the Frank Spain heirs for the life estate provided by Mr. Spain to their father.
