Funeral service for Basil Smith, age 84, of Columbiana, was

11 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007, at Bolton-Letlow Chapel.

Burial followed at Pinelawn Gardens. Visitation was one hour prior to the service at Bolton-Letlow Funeral Home.

Mr. Smith, who passed away Sunday, Dec. 9, 2007. at a local assisted living home, was born April 20, 1923, in Andalusia.

Mr.Smith was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbiana.

He was also a WW II combat veteran, longtime Shelby County businessman and home builder. He was also one of the founding members of Shelby Memorial Hospital where he served on the original board of directors. He was a Mason, Shelby Lodge No. 140.

He is preceded in death by Valera Smith and their two sons Paul and Joe Smith and Christine Smith.

He is survived by his son, Rick (M.J.) Smith; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother, Nick (Annette) Smith; sister, Charlotte (Harry) Herston; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
