HOOVER – Thompson Middle School blasted through the Metro South Middle School Wrestling Tournament at Spain Park High School, beating Oak Mountain Middle 48-33 in the championship match Saturday.

The Warriors received help from five wrestlers who went undefeated on the day, as Reed Jacks swept through the 75-pound weight class with five pins to tie Oak Mountain heavyweight Hunter Rich for the most pins of the tournament. Eighth grader Cody Albarado, who also wrestles for the Thompson High varsity squad, had four pins and a forfeiture win at 103 pounds. Nich Hall (112 pounds) and James Jones (119 pounds) each also had four pins and a decision, while 135-pounder Josh Gillespie had three pins and two decisions.

Thompson jumped out to a 30-3 lead to start the match with the help of the undefeated wrestlers. Oak Mountain battled back, but the Warriors held on for the win.

Dalton Burkhart also had four pins during the day for Thompson.

Thompson advanced to the title match with a 67-19 win over Mountain Brook after winning the Silver Pool in pool play. Oak Mountain was runner-up behind Thompson from the Silver Pool and beat Hewitt-Trussville, 45-30, to reach the final.

Hewitt and Mountain Brook both defeated Riverchase in pool play; however, Riverchase bounced back to finish ninth in the consolation round with a 48-34 win over Homewood.

Berry Middle School lost 61-17 to Bumpus in the first round of the championship round after finishing second to Pizitz in pool play. Berry went on to finish eighth after falling to Hewitt-Trussville and Pizitz in consolation.

Oak Mountain had four wrestlers go undefeated during the day: Jimmy White (125), Ray Dokelli (130), Justin Woodall (145) and Rich (heavyweight). Phillip Dimick, while not perfect, had four pins.

Madden Saverse led Berry with four pins at heavyweight, while 95-pounder Tommy Bostany had two pins, a tech fall and a decision.

Dustin Jordan (165 pounds) led Riverchase with three pins.

The tournament counts toward the Metro South Championship.
