Boys basketball roundup: Oak Mountain falls at the buzzer

Hoover’s Michael Turner made a steal and dropped in a layup at the buzzer Tuesday to give the Bucs their second-straight area win in a 57-55 victory over Oak Mountain.

The Eagles jumped out to a five-point lead in the first quarter and extended that lead to seven at the half before the Bucs mounted their second-half comeback.

Offensively for the Eagles (17-4, 0-3), Stephen Jordan had a team-high 16 points, followed by Ronnie Mack with 13 points.

The Eagles play host to Vestavia Hills Friday at 7 p.m.

In other boys action:

Calera 73, Indian Springs 38: Three players scored in double digits Tuesday for Calera as the Eagles jumped out to an early lead over Indian Springs and never looked back en route to a 73-38 lopsided victory.

Offensively for the Eagles (12-4), Demarcus Dowdell, Drew Hannon and Chris Major scored 13 points apiece.

Will Smith led Springs with eight points.

The Eagles travel to take on Leeds Friday, while Springs (7-7) travels to Altamont.

Spain Park 49, Vestavia Hills 46:

Down by one going into the final quarter, Spain Park’s Josh Magette scored eight of his team-high 20 points, including two 3-pointers, to help lift the Jaguars to the area victory over Vestavia Hills, 49-46.

Also scoring in double digits for the Jags (14-5) was Jake Drum with 12 points.

Chelsea 65, Shades Mountain Christian 45:

Alex Sturdivant scored a game-high 30 points Tuesday as the Chelsea Hornets jumped on Shades Mountain Christian early and held on for the win, 65-45.

Sturdivant scored 16 of his 30 points in the final quarter and finished the night 7-of-10 from the 3-point line.

Stephen Icolano also had nine points in the win for Chelsea (9-14).

Vincent 102, Thorsby 46:

The Vincent Yellow Jackets highly outmatched Tuesday’s opponent, the Thorsby Rebels, in a dominating win, 102-46.

Five players scored in double digits for the Yellow Jackets, led by B.J. Hamilton with a game-high 20 points.

Cameron Posey finished with 18 points, Tavoris Threatt with 15 points, Keyon Wallace with 13 points and Rishawn Daniel with 10.

Vincent (14-6) travels Thursday to Jefferson Christian.

Jackson-Olin 69, Thompson 60:

Despite Siddeeq Cooper’s 19-point effort, the Thompson Warriors were unable to overcome a six-point halftime deficit during Tuesday’s 69-60 loss at Jackson-Olin.

Charles Marzette also scored in double digits for the Warriors, finishing with 11 on the night.

The Warriors travel down the road Friday to take on cross-town rival Pelham. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Coosa Valley 61, Lighthouse Christian 42:

J.B. Ripley scored a team-high 21 points, with five assists, as the Coosa Valley Rebels upended Lighthouse of Montgomery Tuesday night, 61-42.

Chase Lacy was next for the Rebels, finishing with a double-double of 12 points and 21 rebounds.

Chris Holcombe also had six assists in the win.

Evangel Christian (Montgomery) 61, Kingwood 52:

With the game tied at 29-29 at the half, Evangel Christian came out on fire in the second half, outscoring Kingwood 32-23, en route to Tuesday night’s victory, 61-52.

Despite the loss, Kingwood’s Andrew Gilliam, Eli Hogan and Brandon Bowen each finished in double digits with 12 points apiece for the Lions (12-4).

Evangel 67, Hope 61:

Although Evangel was outscored 37-25 in the first half, the Saints came back in the second half to outscore Hope, 42-24, during the Eagles’ 67-61 loss Tuesday.

Offensively for the Eagles (5-10), Michael Johnston had a game-high 17 points, followed by Adam Davis and Brandon Thomas with nine points apiece
