Prep recap: Santos sparks Panthers over Jags

Trae Santos’ sixth-inning double broke open a 3-3 tie Wednesday to secure the Birmingham Metro tournament victory for the Pelham Panthers over the Spain Park Jaguars, 6-3.

Spain Park tied the game in the top half of the sixth, but Santos drove in two runs before the Panthers (11-3) added another run to take the win.

Although the Jags out-hit the Panthers, 8-4, Spain Park left 11 men on base, crushing any hopes of a late comeback.

Offensively for the Panthers, Ryan Roberts was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs, Santos was 1-for-2 and Caleb Payne was 1-for-2. Jack Wilson, Matt Lawson, Todd Colbert, Wes Rich, Andrew Bishop and Austin Dubberly each scored in the win.

For Spain Park, Josh Magette was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Drew Watson was 2-for-4, Cameron White was 1-for-1 and Carter White, Arthur Strauss and Charlie Esskuchen were each 1-for-3.

Cody Rice earned the win for the Panthers, striking out four, while Tripp Martin got the save.

Frank Mullen picked up the loss for the Jags.

Oak Mountain 4, Thompson 2: With bases loaded and the score tied 2-2, Chase Traffica nailed a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday to help lift the Oak Mountain Eagles to the Birmingham Metro tournament victory over the Thompson Warriors, 4-2
