CALERA-A local florist got her chance to shine at the Alabama State Floral Association’s 2008 Convention.
Kimberly Young won the ASFA Designer of the Year award for her three-part series in the “Alice in Floraland” themed competition. Her designs consisted of a corsage, a bridal bouquet and an original creation of choice.
Young said each contestant went into a room for a limited amount of time to work on the three-part project. The corsage and bridal bouquet portions each lasted 30 minutes, while the original creation was allowed one hour to complete.
Judges critiqued each work using a point system based on creativity, technique and form.
Along with her winning title, Young also took second place in the state cup “Queen of Hearts” division.
That’s quite outstanding, considering this was her first time to enter the competition.
The ASFA is divided into separate divisions according to florist’s location. Young, who co-owns LeFleur Florist in Calera with her mother Carol Martin, is a member of the North Central Alabama Floral Association.
This year’s convention took place March 14-16 at the Hilton Hotel in Birmingham
