HARPERSVILLE – Harpersville officials recently took part in the National League of Cities’ Congressional City Conference in Washington, D.C.

Officials attending included Mayor Theoangelo Perkins and council members Beverly Oden-Johnson and Shirley Middleton.

With the help of Senator Richard Shelby, Senator Jeff Sessions and members of Congressman Spencer Bachus’ staff, future plans are underway for economic and community development for Harpersville.

Workshops and seminars held at the conference focused on several issues affecting not only Harpersville, but cities across the nation, as well.

Topics included the mortgage foreclosure crisis and the slowing economy, sustainability, crumbling infrastructure, rising gang violence and immigrant services.

According to Mayor Perkins, the Congressional City Conference meets annually to provide leaders a chance to bring local concerns before their federal elected officials in Washington, D.C.

The National League of Cities is an advocate for 19,000 cities nation-wide and represents more than 218 million people. It is also the oldest and largest promoter of opportunity, leadership and governance for American cities, towns and villages
