Did you know that if you recycle 4 feet of newspaper you save one, 40-foot, tree from being cut down?

Several second-grade classes came to a unanimous conclusion that trees are one of the most used resources at Helena Elementary School. The paper, books, pencils and even some furniture comes from trees.

The kids in Mrs. Winter’s, Mrs. Clay’s, Mrs. Patterson’s and Mrs. Brast’s classes decided to help the Earth by having a newspaper recycling drive.

The teachers involved say that actively involving the children in this experience teaches them to appreciate what it means to be environmentally conscious.

The drive ended April 22, Earth Day, but the impact of this project goes much deeper. The class accepted donations from local nurseries and will continue to for next year’s project
