Clark Galvin, an eighth-grade student at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School, recently won first place in a creative writing contest sponsored by the English Department at Jacksonville State University entitled, “Imagining the Holocaust.”

Galvin’s short story, “The Tattoo,” captured first place in the short story category, earning Galvin a $100 savings bond.

Another OLV eighth-grade student, Sara Goodwin, submitted her poem, “The Holocaust,” which also won second place in the poetry contest.

Earlier this year, eighth-grade students at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School studied the Holocaust.

It provided the students the opportunity to discuss issues of fairness, racism, injustice and intolerance surrounding this year’s theme of “Remember, Reflect and React.”

Their studies were highlighted by the visit of a Holocaust survivor, Jack Bass, on National Holocaust Memorial Day, January 27.

Bass was 19 years old when the Nazis arrested him.
