The Montevallo Main Street Players staged “Cobb,” a drama by Lee Blessing, June 20-22 at the Parnell Memorial Library Theater in Montevallo.

The character of Ty Cobb, the driven and troubling baseball legend, is dramatized through the interaction of three different personae at various crucial ages in his life: The Peach in his rookie season with the Detroit Tigers; Ty just after the end of his baseball career; and Mr. Cobb in his 70s and nearing death.

The play shifts freely in time, as each Cobb recalls and interprets the meanings of his life.

Cobb’s fragmented self-interpretation is challenged by Oscar Charleston, a legendary player in the segregated Negro Leagues, known as “the black Cobb.”

The play is grounded in the realities of personal stability, athletic heroism and racial discrimination in America.
