Low medal winner Jorge Fernandez Valdes’ run at becoming the first non-American resident to win a U.S. Junior Amateur came to an end Thursday in the third round of match play. Fernandez Valdes, who shot 8-under par through 36 holes of stroke play earlier this week, fell in 21 holes to Andrew Yun of Tacoma, Wash., Thursday.

Yun trailed the entire match before evening the score with the help of a birdie on No. 17 and a bogie by Fernandez Valdes on 18. Both golfers parred the first two holes of extra play before Fernandez Valdes came up short of par by a stroke on the third hole to lose the match.

Yun advances to Friday morning’s quarterfinal round against Jordan Spieth of Dallas, Texas, who defeated fellow Texan David Parsons by eight strokes with seven holes left to play.

Fernandez Valdes started the day with a 6 and 5 victory over Bobby Wyatt of Mobile, leaving Mountain Brook’s Tom Lovelady as the only Alabamian left in the tournament.

Lovelady defeated Jordan Lee of California by two strokes in the Thursday morning round, but fell short by a stroke to Andrew Steinhofer, of Wisconsin, in the third round. Lovelady led by two strokes entering the back 9, but bogeys on 13 and 16 pulled him even with Steinhofer, who went on to birdie 17 to take the lead.

Lovelady said he enjoyed the experience, as he tried to become the first Alabamian to reach the quarterfinals since his late friend, and Spain Park golfer, Bradley Johnson was runner-up in the 2005 Junior Am in Longmeadow, Mass.

“I enjoyed all of it out here,” Lovelady told a United States Golf Association member after the match. “Going to 18, all I could hear was, ‘You can do it, Tom!’”

The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of play are Friday with a 36-hole championship scheduled for Saturday.
