Junior quarterback Kevin Callender completed 6-of-13 passes and threw for 74 yards to help lead Montevallo past Fultondale, 19-0, during a preseason varsity scrimmage Aug. 23.

Callender connected with Brandon Lilly on a 32-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring for the day. Drew Harris later extended the lead with a fumble recovery for a touchdown, before Callender tacked on another touchdown with a 22-yard pass to Dejuan Fulghum.

Fultondale’s only points for the night was an interception returned for a touchdown during the junior varsity scrimmage.

Montevallo head coach Jim King was pleased with the outcome of the scrimmage, allowing his team to get in a set number of reps and run a script of plays, while avoiding injury.

“We do it a little different,” King said. “For me, everything is an extension of preparing for Aug. 29, from spring to summer, to passing camps to August practices. It’s an extension.”

King said his team has numerous items to work on before Calera comes to town Friday.

“We’re going to do our job to make sure that they’re corrected and be as close as to ready as we need to be for Friday night,” King said.

Montevallo rushed for 58 yards in the game and threw for 74.

The Bulldogs will open the season at 7 p.m. against down-the-street rival Calera.

“This is the game for us and our communities. It’s obviously a big rival and could be a big spring board into the season. They’ve had the upper hand,” King said.
