Kingwood falls flat in opener

Last season, the Kingwood Christian Lions opened the season with a shutout victory over the Hooper Colts, 21-0.

This season, it was Hooper’s turn as the Colts repaid the favor by dominating the Lions, 43-2.

“It was one of those night’s where if it could go wrong, it did,” Kingwood head coach Jerry Stearns said.

The Lions fell behind early and could never quite catch up.

Every time the Lions took a step forward, they took two steps back.

At the half, Stearns said his team made some adjustments that helped, but the Lions would eventually shoot themselves in the foot.

“If you continue to have penalties, fumbles, interceptions, it will kill you all night,” Stearns said.

“We’ve just got to go back to work, reteach some things and keep our heads up,” He added.

The Lions return to action Friday as they travel to Morgan Academy in Selma.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
