The Thompson Warriors’ eight offensive possessions Friday night ended in three punts, two turnovers on downs, an interception, a safety and an empty clock at halftime as the Mountain Brook Spartans took the shutout win, 39-0.

In the Warriors’ first game back in Class 6A, Region 6, it was all Spartans (1-0, 1-0).

Thompson (0-1, 0-1) took the opening kickoff, but was forced to punt three plays later.

Mountain Brook went right to work as Judson Golson connected on a 12-yard touchdown pass to put the Spartans up 7-0.

Following the Warriors’ second punt, the Thompson defense held strong, holding Spartan kicker Edward McGuffey to a 24-yard field goal.

On the ensuing possession, the Warriors were pinned at their own 3-yard line when the Spartan defense surrounded and put down Thompson quarterback David Bria for the safety to increase the lead to 12-0.

In the second quarter, Golson added a 1-yard touchdown run and John Marsh pounded in a touchdown from 4 yards out to put the Spartans up 26-0 at the half.

The second half started out on a high note for the Warriors as junior Melvin Jones picked up a Marsh fumble and returned it 28 yards.

However, the drive would end on a fourth down and that would be as close as the Warriors would get.

Marsh added another touchdown in the fourth quarter, as did Murphy Walters, but the damage had already been down.

“I think our kids played hard,” Thompson head coach Brian Maner said. “We’ll just have to go back to work.”
