With another stellar defensive performance, the Evangel Lightning moved to 4-0 Friday with a shutout victory over Lafayette Christian of Lagrange, Ga., 60-0.

For the second game in a row, the Lightning held the opposing team to zero or less yards by stopping the Cougars for -48 yards on the ground.

Lafayette finished with -9 total yards, with Evangel capping the defensive effort with a sack on its goal line on the game’s final play.

“We never quite,” Evangel head coach Steve Dean said. “They understand even when we’re obviously better than the other team, they play hard. That’s our challenge to these guys.”

The Lightning started the night like it has in its previous three victories with an offensive spark by Hunter Burridge. Burridge scampered 65 yards on the game’s first play for a touchdown.

Burridge followed that up with 36-yard punt return for a touchdown before the Lightning started sharing the ball in the backfield, with 12 rushers gaining 247 yards on the ground.

Michael Entrekin added Evangel’s third score on a 5-yard run, and Beaux Byrd scored the Lightning’s third rushing touchdown from two yards out to increase the lead to 22-0.

Austin Sullivan gave the Lightning four rushing touchdowns with a 1-yard run before Henry Foster connected for 20-yard touchdown screen pass to Burridge.

Evangel added one more score in the game as Hayden Brown rushed for the fourth-quarter score.

Offensively, Burridge had 95 yards on two carries and Drew Herndon had 40 yards.

“Our offensive line is the key for is, Dean said. “You can just see the holes open up. It’s obvious.”

Defensively, 18 players record at least a tackle, led by Collin Hipps with six tackles, all for loss. A.J. Richardson had a 30-yard interception return, Luke Webb had four tackles for loss and Wesley Dean had two tackles, including a sack.

The Lightning will play host to region opponent Trinity Christian on Friday at the new location at Berry Middle School.
