It took until the end of the first half, but once the Vincent Yellow Jackets found the end zone Friday at Hale County, they found it over-and-over again.

Vincent (2-0, 1-0) racked up 29 points in the second half to down Class 2A, Region 4 opponent Hale County, 36-29, after being held scoreless for most of the first half.

“They didn’t really ever stop us defensively, the only problem was we never really stopped them,” Vincent head coach Dwight Spradley said.

Vincent scored its first touchdown of the night on a 13-yard pass from Corey Deloach to Brett Frizzell with 29 seconds left in the first half. The Jackets opened the second half with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Deloach to Keyon Wallace, followed by a 2-point pass to Juwan Rogers to take a 15-14 lead.

Once the Jackets got the lead, the two teams traded scores through the night.

Deloach, who threw for 191 yards, found Wallace again with 6:34 left in the third quarter for his third touchdown and hit Michael Kelley midway through the fourth quarter for his fourth passing touchdown and to give Vincent a 30-26 lead. The Jackets held the Hale County Wildcats on the following possession and pushed the lead further with a 48-yard run by Rogers, who had 202 yards rushing in the game.

The win gives the Jackets their first 2-0 start since 2001.

“Our psyche right now is really good. We are as excited as a football team as we have been in seven years. The key to the game tonight was that they did not quit. In years past if we got down a little but we didn’t fight hard,” Spradley said.

Vincent will play its first home game of the season Friday when it hosts Isabella, who beat Fultondale, 20-10, Friday.

“We’re going to have our hands completely full. I thought Fultondale was one of the top two teams in our region. It’s going to be a challenge,” Spradley said.
