Someone had to fall to 0-3 Friday, and unfortunately for the Oak Mountain Eagles, it was them.

Gardendale picked up its first win in Class 6A, 22-7, over Oak Mountain with the help of two rushing touchdowns by Trey Hilliard, who collected more than 130 yards rushing in the game.

The Eagles’ lone score came on a 1-yard quarterback keeper by Drew McKnight in the first half to give Oak Mountain a 7-3 lead, but the Eagles trailed 10-7 at the half and were unable to find their offense the rest of the night.

“We didn’t have our kids mentally focused and ready to play,” Oak Mountain head coach Jerry Hood said. “We thought we had a pretty decent week of practice. We’re the reason that didn’t carry over to Friday night.”

McKnight carried the load for Oak Mountain, passing for 144 yard and running for 119.

The loss pits Oak Mountain (0-3) against Homewood (0-3) in a battle for last place in Class 6A, Region 6 when the Patriots visit Heardmont Park this week.

“What we have to focus on right now is focusing on making ourselves better. Nothing matters if we’re not going to do things a little better than what we’re doing now,” Hood said.

Injuries still plague the Eagles, who had four starters out for Fridays game, including tight end Davis Dudchock.

Hood said three of the four are expected to miss this Friday’s game against Homewood.
