For two weeks, the Shelby County Wildcats (3-0) have reeled off wins over Pell City and Briarwood, but big upsets can often be the blueprint for big letdowns.

Could the visiting 1A Georgiana Panthers (0-3) catch the Wildcats at an opportune time?

The quick answer, well no, as the Wildcats prevailed again with a 41-14 win over the Panthers.

“The main thing is that we got the win tonight, but we went out there in the first half not focused and lacked some intensity that we’ve had the last couple of weeks,” Wildcat head coach Ryan Herring said. “We played better in the second half, and the kids kept playing hard, but good football teams play with consistency, and we have a lot to work on.”

Shelby County’s offense hit the field clicking on all cylinders after a Panther four-an-out with Tae Lewis and Darion Sutton carrying the load.

The contrasting duo led the Wildcat offense quickly down the field with Lewis dashing his way into the end zone for a 1-yard touchdown run.

The Wildcats looked to go up, 14-0, on a 56-yard interception by Demonte Ford, but the play was negated by a defensive pass interference call. The Panthers welcomed the favor with Kevin Brogden connecting with a wide-open LaCory Savage for a touchdown strike.

With the score knotted, 7-7, the ‘Cats knew they had to answer, and they did.

Set up by a previous 37-yard scamper by Lewis, he then got the call again from the Panther 6-yard line to put SCHS back in the lead, 14-7.

Chris McDowell added two additional scores for the Wildcats in the second quarter with a 25-yard dash and a 3-yard run to put the Wildcats out to a comfortable 28-7 lead.

Just as the game looked to be all but over, the Panthers weren’t done.

Deven Cheatham took the ball on an option pitch and cruised 53-yards down the field for the score, to send the Panthers into halftime down 28-14.

Shelby County regrouped and came out in the second half to put the game away with Sutton adding two more scoring runs of 23-yards and 18-yards.

Sutton ended with a stellar night, collecting a quiet 208 yards on the ground on 24 carries, while Lewis added with 75 yards of his own. Ford had a piece of the pie with 49 yards.

Georgiana rolled up 174 yards of total offense.

Shelby travels to region opponent Sylacauga next week.
