Hope was backed up 20 times on penalties, adding up to 190 yards, but that didn’t stop the Eagles from laying their offense on thick in a 72-14 victory at Eastern Central on Friday.

“The offense was executing and running plays well with the exception of the penalties,” Hope head coach John Gordon said.

The Eagles held a slim, 14-6, lead midway through the first quarter, but jumped out to a 30-6 lead at halftime, allowing their second and third string to play the second half.

“Our no huddle offense just wore them down,” Gordon said.

Leading the way in the no huddle offense was quarterback Zac Hughes, who threw for four touchdowns, ran in three more and ran in two 2-point conversions. Ben Nafe also found the end zone on the ground, while Hughes connected with Robert Jacks twice through the air. He also found Kelly Findlay, Eric Spence and Terrence Moore one time each by air for a touchdown. Hughes finished the game with 402 yards of total offense, 210 by ground and 192 passing.

Jake Medders led Hope defensively with 14 tackles, followed by Caleb Rettig’s 13 tackles and eight from Brock Boyd.

Next week’s homecoming game with Tuscaloosa Home School was canceled, leaving the Eagles (3-1) with an open week before hosting CrossPointe Christian out of Georgia for homecoming Oct. 3.
