Shelby Academy returned to the win column Friday as it returned home, holding off Springwood, 14-12.

“It was big (to win),” Shelby head coach Shannon Jones said. “We’re one win away from the playoffs now. We have Evangel and Autauga left. If we win one of those, we’re locked in.”

Springwood scored first on a 5-yard run by Rory Spurlock, but failed to convert on its point-after kick.

Shelby running back Jason McDaniel answered in the opening quarter with a 1-yard touchdown run and found the end zone again in the second quarter from 4 yards out. Jordan Ikner split the uprights on both point-after kicks, which proved to be the difference in the game.

The Raiders defense managed to keep the lead through the second half until the Shelby offense gave the ball to Springwood at its 20 after a fumble by Cody Jones. Moments later, Spurlock scored from 8 yards out. The Raiders’ defense held strong on the 2-point pass, as it fell incomplete to allow Shelby to maintain a 2-point lead.

Jones said it is nice to have a win after dropping two-straight on the road. He felt the key this week was how his team came together.

Shelby (3-2, 2-2) will host Class 3A opponent Pike next Friday.
