Strapping it on to play West Blocton is seen as a chance to set records for some Montevallo players. Last year, quarterback Kevin Callender set two records in the game with more than 500 yards of offense and seven touchdowns. Friday, Callender accounted for six TDs and 433 yards of offense to down West Blocton, 42-21.

However, those numbers have not been rare this season for Callender, but Friday’s success, according to head coach Jim King, was about consistency in other areas.

King said the Bulldogs worked all week on their special teams and ability to keep the opposing team within their own red zone to start drives.

“We had been giving up too many yards on kickoffs and knew we had to make a change,” King said. “That’s what we preached all week, and they did one heck of a job pinning them back deep.”

That field position made it hard for Blocton to drive the length of the field enough times to answer Montevallo’s offense, despite collecting 299 yards of offense in the game.

Callender set the tone for the game mid-way through the first quarter with a 58-yard touchdown pass to Drew Harris. He later added touchdown runs of 9 and 64 yards to leap out to a 21-0 lead. James Kelton put the Tigers on the board with 3:10 left to play in the first half.

While the Tigers found the scoreboard, Montevallo showed it could still do so with more flash and frequency, as Callender opened the second half with a 66-yard pass to Dajuan Fulgham. The two connected again later on a 64-yard scoring pass. West Blocton answered each of Montevallo’s touchdowns in the third quarter.

Both teams’ defenses posted a shutout through the fourth quarter until Kevin Callender broke through the line and dashed 77 yards for a third rushing touchdown with :09 left in the game.

“I was pleased not just for the win, but we had a really hard week and got after it really good,” King said. “We won the previous two weeks, but we didn’t win the way I’d like to … The problem we’ve had is being consistent and playing a great game, and letting up a little bit. Great teams don’t do that.”

The win is Montevallo’s third straight and first on the road this season. The Dawgs (4-1, 2-1) will travel to LaFayette for a region game next week.
