All-time University of Montevallo leading scorer Jonathan Maloney gave his team its first conference victory of the season Sunday, scoring the game winner in a 2-1 victory at Christian Brothers University.

UM held on for the victory after going one man down with 35 minutes left in the match. Fortunate for the Falcons, Maloney’s goal came moments before at the 53:50 mark off an assist from Nathaniel Foster.

A total of 37 fouls and seven cards were handed out in the physical Gulf South Conference opener, including a red card slapped on UM’s Cruyff Dos Remedios in the 64th minute.

Montevallo scored the first goal of the match in the seventh minute, unassisted by Otavio Tramontina. CBU’s Zach Tubinis scored his second goal of the season three minutes later to tie the match, 1-1.

UM goalkeeper David Esser’s only shot faced in the match was the goal by Tubinis, as he picked up his fourth win of the season.

The Falcons (5-4-0, 1-0-0) return to action Friday at GSC foe Harding University.
