Former Pelham wide receiver Dabo Swinney was named the Clemson University interim head coach Monday.

Swinney, who joined the Clemson staff in 2003, takes over for head coach Tommy Bowden, who parted ways with the university Monday morning, according to a release from the Clemson athletic department.

Bowden served as Clemson’s head coach for 10 seasons. The Tigers, who started the season ranked No. 9 in the nation, fell to 3-3 on the season Thursday with a loss to Wake Forest.

Swinney, 39, played football at the University of Alabama after playing at Pelham High School. He was a receiver on the Tide’s national championship team in 1992. After his playing days, Swinney became a graduate assistant coach and then wide receivers coach at Alabama through the 2000 season.

Swinney’s name was circulated as a candidate for the South Alabama job after the 2007 season. He will lead the Tigers in his first game as interim head coach Saturday morning against Georgia Tech. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
