Montgomery Academy continued it’s unbeaten streak on the road Friday and killed Montevallo High School’s hopes of making an appearance in playoffs, 17-14.

“I think we played hard,” said Montevallo head coach Jim King. “Nobody gave us a chance in this game.”

The Bulldogs got off to a strong start, scoring early in the second quarter with a 28-yard pass from Kevin Callender to Brandon Lilly. The extra point by Gilberto Fernandez put Montevallo up 7-0.

But it wasn’t long before the Eagles had an answer. Montgomery Academy tied the game with 6:32 to play in the half and later took a touchdown lead into the locker room, 14-7.

The third quarter started out strong for the Bulldogs after Callender connected with Lilly for a second touchdown from 12 yards out, tying the game 14-14. The 155 passing yards would not be enough, though, to keep the hopes of a playoff game alive for the injury-riddled Bulldogs.

The Eagles scored the last points of the game in the fourth quarter with a field goal to take the final lead.

During the next kick off, with a little more than 6:00 left in the game, Callender, who has been injured the last two weeks, was injured. He finished the night with 12 rushes for 164 yards and 9-of-18 passing. His status for next Friday’s game against Trinity Presbyterian is unknown.

With the injury, came the end of the Bulldogs’ chances.

The last play of the game left the Bulldogs with another injury to add to their long list as Drew Harris was hurt on the last play of the game. King said he thought Harris would be back for next week.

Since the LaFayette game Oct. 3, Montevallo (4-4, 2-4) has lost four players for the season with knee injuries and have a handful of others with nagging injuries each week.

“We thought we’d go 9-1, finish second in the region and host a playoff game,” King said. “It’s very frustrating and disheartening (to have so many players injured). Our players have worked so hard. This is my 16th season and I’ve never been a part of, as a player or a coach, any team where things have slipped so quick. It’s a tough pill to swallow … We had a special football team, and for whatever the reason, it wasn’t meant to be.”
